How long does perimenopause last?
Perimenopause lasts an average of 4 to 8 years before periods stop completely. It can begin as early as age 40-45. The first signs are often irregular cycles, night waking, and mood swings, even before hot flashes appear.
Can a midwife support me during perimenopause?
Yes. Midwives are qualified to care for women throughout their reproductive lives. They can assess your symptoms, order hormone tests, and discuss treatment options or additional support during perimenopause.
Can diet help during perimenopause?
Yes. Maintaining an adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D supports bone health. Phytoestrogens (soy, legumes, flaxseeds) may alleviate certain symptoms. Reducing stimulants helps with sleep and hot flashes. A specialized dietitian can create a personalized plan for you.
⚠️ Precaution: in the form of dietary supplements, phytoestrogens (soy, red clover, hops, etc.) are not recommended if you have a personal or family history of hormone-dependent cancer, endometriosis, or fibroids. When consumed in food in reasonable amounts, they are not a problem. If in doubt, seek advice from a healthcare professional.
Perimenopause and mental health: what is the link?
Hormonal fluctuations also affect the brain: anxiety, irritability, sleep disturbances, and brain fog. According to a 2024 meta-analysis from University College London, the risk of depressive symptoms is about 40% higher during perimenopause than before, and this increased risk is not seen after menopause. This period also often coincides with a heavy mental load. If you are feeling vulnerable, do not hesitate to seek support from a psychologist or another professional.
