Who is Fizimed?
Pumping milk while taking care of your baby, in a meeting, on the train, or at the office without anyone noticing: this was still a pipe dream just a few years ago. The Fizimed Emy Pump is one of the few wearable breast pumps that has truly kept this promise. It doesn't sacrifice power for discretion, nor simplicity for features. Here is a complete, no-nonsense review of this hands-free pump, what it does really well, and what you need to know before buying.
Fizimed is an Alsatian startup, founded by women for women, specializing in innovative medical devices dedicated to women's health. Their first product, the Emy connected pelvic floor trainer, has already been adopted by over 350,000 women. The Emy Pump was born from a simple observation: the wearable breast pumps available on the market were not living up to their promises. They were too weak, too complex, too dependent on an app, and not quiet enough. Fizimed decided to design its own solution, collaborating with healthcare professionals and nursing mothers at every stage of development.
Marion, Product Manager at Fizimed and a PhD in neuroscience, personally led this development with a clear requirement: the power and the ability to maintain that power had to be on par with hospital-grade pumps. This is what fundamentally distinguishes the Emy Pump from most of its competitors.
To understand everything in video, Marion explains the operation and technical choices of the Emy Pump in detail: Everything you need to know about the Emy Pump with Marion.
The technical specifications that really matter
Power: 300 mmHg like a hospital-grade pump
This is the number one criterion for an effective breast pump. The Emy Pump reaches up to 300 mmHg of suction pressure, which is the level of hospital-grade pumps. This is not just a marketing figure: it is what truly determines the amount of milk expressed and the ability to trigger and maintain let-down reflexes.
What further distinguishes the Emy Pump: the power is maintained consistently for a full 30 minutesMany breast pumps start at maximum power, only to drop off within the first few minutes. However, the second and third let-down reflexes often occur mid-session; if the power has already decreased by then, some milk is lost.
Battery life: 150 minutes for multiple sessions
The Emy Pump offers up to 150 minutes of battery life, which is enough for about 8 sessions of 20 minutes each. This is well above the market average (typically 90 to 120 minutes). In practical terms, for a workday with 2 to 3 pumping sessions, a single charge is all you need.
Discretion: under 50 dB and wireless
Less than 50 decibels: that’s barely more than a whisper. The Emy Pump slips directly into your nursing bra, with no wires or tubes. The adjustable strap included in the kit ensures a comfortable fit for most body types.
In practice: you can use it in a meeting (with a jacket or loose sweater), on public transport, or simply at home without being tethered to a chair.
Simplicity: no app, 3 buttons, 15-second assembly
This is a deliberate choice by Fizimed: no app, no Bluetooth, no setup required. Just three buttons on the side to turn it on/off, change the mode, and adjust the intensity. A screen displays the mode, intensity, timer, and battery level.
This choice addresses real-world realities: an app crashing at the wrong moment or a mom finding herself without a signal while traveling and unable to use her pump are situations that actually happen. The Emy Pump works every time, everywhere, with no strings attached. Assembly takes about 15 seconds, with no complex parts or tricky seals to put together.
The 6 flange sizes: the factor everyone underestimates
The Emy Pump comes with 6 flange sizes : 15, 17, 19, 21, 24, and 28 mm. This is exceptional in the market. Most competitors provide 2 to 4 sizes, and sometimes only one.
Why this is crucial: the standard sizes offered in most maternity wards and with rental hospital pumps are around 24 mm. However, the majority of women have nipples between 13 and 15 mm. A flange that is too large pulls in part of the areola, which reduces drainage efficiency and can cause pain, swelling, or even cracks. A flange that is too small rubs against the nipple and causes the same issues.
Having all 6 sizes included from the start allows you to find the right fit without buying extra parts, and to adapt to the natural changes in your breasts throughout your breastfeeding journey. The flanges are made of soft silicone, which offers a slight margin of tolerance compared to rigid plastic flanges.
The 3 suction modes: mimicking a baby at the breast
The Emy Pump offers 3 distinct modes, each with 9 intensity levels:
- Stimulation mode (fast, light suction): mimics a baby's initial suckling to trigger the let-down reflex
- Expression mode (slower, deeper suction): replicates the baby's rhythm once the milk is flowing, for effective drainage
- Massage mode : a helping hand for triggering difficult let-down reflexes, highly appreciated by moms
This alternating mode pattern faithfully reproduces the natural rhythm of a nursing session, allowing the Emy Pump to trigger let-down reflexes just like an effective baby at the breast.
Double pumping: express twice as much in half the time
The Emy Pump is available in a double version (two breast pumps, one for each breast). Pumping both breasts simultaneously triggers the let-down reflex on both sides at once, just like when a baby nurses on one side and the other "lets down" at the same time. In practice: a 20-minute double pumping session yields better results than a 20-minute session on each breast separately.
Another advantage of double pumping with two portable breast pumps: each side is independently adjustable. About 75% of women have different milk production levels between their left and right breasts. With two Emy Pumps, you can adapt the intensity and mode separately for each side.
Cleaning: a real strong point
The parts that come into contact with milk are dishwasher safe. The reservoir is designed with an accessible shape that doesn't require a bottle brush and dries completely, eliminating the risk of bacterial growth or mold (a recurring issue with some competing models). In total, there are 5 washable parts, with no complex seals or small pieces that get lost in the sink.
What the Emy Pump is not
Let's be honest: the Emy Pump is an excellent portable, on-the-go breast pump. It is not a pump for establishing or relactating.
To establish lactation, boost a declining supply, or cope with separation from a newborn (prematurity, hospitalization), a hospital-grade rental pump remains the gold standard. Its raw power and higher cycle rates (60 to 120 per minute compared to 40 to 60 for the Emy Pump) allow for more effective drainage in these critical situations.
The Emy Pump is the ideal tool for mobility: returning to work, traveling, running errands, or any situation where you cannot use a corded hospital-grade pump. Many moms use both in combination: the hospital-grade pump at home for quiet sessions, and the Emy Pump everywhere else.
Price and warranty
- Single version: €89
- Double version: €134 (that's €67 per breast pump, a great value for double pumping)
- Warranty: 2 years on the electronic hub, 90 days on washable parts
- Trial: 30 days to test it out and return it if it's not the right fit for you
Key takeaways
The Emy Pump is currently one of the most comprehensive hands-free wearable breast pumps on the market. Its key strengths:
- 300 mmHg maintained for a full 30 minutes
- 6 flange sizes included (a rare and crucial feature for comfort and efficiency)
- 150 minutes of battery life for multiple sessions without needing a charge
- No app works everywhere, all the time, no strings attached
- Simplified cleaning : dishwasher safe, no bottle brush needed
- Double pumping available with independent settings for each breast
Keep in mind: this is a portable breast pump, not a primary pump for establishing supply. To kickstart lactation or manage complex situations, a hospital-grade pump remains the gold standard.
