Before choosing a model: define your needs
The portable breast pump market has exploded in recent years. Dozens of models, prices ranging from 40 to 300 euros, and marketing promises that all sound the same: "hospital-grade power," "hands-free," "ultra-quiet." How do you navigate this when you're in the middle of the postpartum period, exhausted, and need a clear answer quickly?
This guide is based on the expertise of Lauriane, an IBCLC-certified lactation consultant, and Marion, product manager at Fizimed and a PhD in neuroscience, who has personally tested dozens of models. This is the starting question, and it changes everything. Before looking at technical specifications, you need to know why you need one.
For returning to work : you are breastfeeding well, your milk supply is established, and you need to pump during your hours away. A high-performance portable breast pump is ideal.
For daily mobility : outings, travel, meetings. Same usage as above, with a priority on discretion.
For building a freezer stash : you want to pump in addition to nursing. A portable breast pump can work well.
For initiating lactation, managing separation from your newborn, or boosting a declining supply : in these situations, a portable breast pump alone is generally not enough. You need a hospital-grade pump (rented from a pharmacy with a prescription), which offers superior power and cycles. The portable pump can be used as a supplement for mobility.
Criterion 1: suction power (and its consistency over time)
This is the most important criterion. The power of a breast pump is measured in mmHg. To be truly effective, a portable breast pump must reach at least 250 mmHg, ideally 300 mmHg, which is the level of hospital-grade devices.
But the peak power listed on the box doesn't tell the whole story. What matters just as much is the sustained power over time. Many portable breast pumps reach their maximum power at the start of a session, then gradually drop off. However, the second and third let-down reflexes, which often occur mid-session, are frequently the most productive. If the power has dropped by then, a significant amount of milk won't be drained.
Criterion 2: flange size (the most underestimated, the most impactful)
This is probably the criterion that causes the most issues when chosen incorrectly. The flange is the part in direct contact with the nipple. Its size must precisely match the nipple's anatomy: not too large (which pulls in part of the areola, reducing efficiency and potentially causing pain, swelling, or cracks), and not too small (which rubs against the nipple and causes the same problems).
The standard size provided in most maternity wards is around 24 mm. Yet, the majority of women have nipples between 13 and 15 mm. The discrepancy is significant.
What to look for before buying: how many flange sizes are included in the starter kit (the more, the better), whether additional flanges are available for purchase separately, whether the material is soft silicone (which offers a slight margin of tolerance) or rigid plastic, and whether a sizing guide is provided by the brand.
The rule for measuring your size: measure the base and the tip of the nipple, then take the median millimeter. Test dynamically with the flange in operation: the nipple should move freely in the tunnel without rubbing against the walls, and no part of the areola should be pulled into the tunnel.

Criterion 3: suction modes (mimicking the baby's rhythm)
A good breast pump should replicate the two natural phases of breastfeeding: the stimulation phase (fast, light suction to trigger the let-down reflex) and the expression phase (slower, deeper suction to drain effectively once the milk is flowing).
Look for a minimum of 2 to 3 distinct modes, with several adjustable intensity levels for each. The ability to fine-tune the intensity is important: every mom has her own unique let-down reflexes. A "massage" mode in addition to the standard modes can help trigger difficult let-downs.
Criterion 4: actual battery life
The battery life stated on the box is always measured under optimal conditions. In real-world use, with high power settings and more intense modes, the effective battery life is often lower. For a workday with 2 to 3 pumping sessions, you need at least 60 to 90 minutes of actual battery life. A stated battery life of 150 minutes generally corresponds to 6 to 8 real sessions.
Criterion 5: discretion in real-world situations
This criterion significantly impacts daily use. A mother who doesn't feel comfortable using her breast pump at the office because it's too noisy won't pump often enough, and her supply will drop.
What to look for: the stated noise level (below 50 dB is discreet; between 50 and 60 dB is audible), the shape (does it fit into a standard nursing bra?), and the size and weight (a device that is too bulky or heavy will be uncomfortable over time).
Criterion 6: ease of use and cleaning
During the postpartum period, the mental load is already high. A breast pump that requires complex assembly or tedious cleaning will gradually be used less. What to look for: the number of parts to assemble, whether washable parts are dishwasher safe, the absence of small parts or seals that trap moisture, and whether or not a bottle brush is needed to clean the reservoir.
Regarding the interface: a breast pump with an app might seem more convenient, but an app that requires a connection or crashes at the wrong time can quickly become a source of frustration. Models without an app, featuring a few simple buttons and a display screen, are often preferred by mothers who pump regularly.
Criterion 7: double pumping
Pumping both breasts simultaneously (double pumping) is the method recommended by lactation consultants. When a baby nurses on one breast, it triggers the let-down reflex in the other. Double pumping mimics this mechanism and allows you to get more milk in less time.
Two options: buy two identical portable breast pumps (advantage: each breast can be adjusted independently, which is useful since about 75% of women have different production levels on each side) or a double breast pump with a dual kit (easier to manage).
