Omega-3 EPAX: what this label truly guarantees (and what it doesn't say)

EPAX is a label you see everywhere on Omega 3 boxes. But unlike IFOS, it's an ingredient brand, not an independent certification for the finished product. Here's what it truly guarantees, and what else you need to check.

What is EPAX?

You've seen "EPAX" on an Omega 3 box and wondered what it meant. Or you've searched for "Omega 3 EPAX" because it was mentioned as a mark of quality. It's a label commonly found on shelves, supplement websites, and in recommendations. But like any label, there are things it guarantees, and things it doesn't.

EPAX is a Norwegian company founded in 1838, specializing in the production of highly concentrated and purified fish oil. It is not an independent certification body: it is an ingredient supplier that sells its oils to supplement brands, which then affix the "EPAX" label to their boxes.

The distinction is important. When you see "IFOS" on a product, you're looking at a certification issued by an independent third-party organization that has tested the finished product. When you see "EPAX," you're looking at an ingredient brand. The supplement manufacturer purchased its oil from EPAX. It's not the same thing.

What EPAX concretely guarantees

EPAX has built its reputation on decades of rigorous manufacturing processes. Here's what the label truly guarantees:

The purity of the raw material. EPAX selects marine raw materials from sustainable and controlled fishing areas. Each batch is tested for contaminants: heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium), PCBs, dioxins, pesticides. The results are generally very good.

High concentration of EPA and DHA. EPAX is known for its highly concentrated oils. The designation "EPAX 4832," for example, means 48% EPA and 32% DHA in the oil, which are significantly higher levels than standard fish oils, which typically contain around 18% EPA and 12% DHA.

A generally good TOTOX index. EPAX oils typically show a TOTOX score below 10. Some specific products advertise a TOTOX below 3.

Additional certifications. EPAX holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certifications, and its oils are Friend of the Sea certified. The IFOS organization has also awarded a 5-star rating to certain EPAX oils.

What EPAX Does Not Guarantee

The final molecular form of the product. EPAX produces oils in various forms, including concentrated ethyl esters. An EPAX-labeled product can therefore be in the form of ethyl esters (a semi-synthetic form that is less well absorbed) or triglycerides. It is not automatically the natural triglyceride form. The molecular form must be checked separately on the label.

The quality of the finished product. EPAX guarantees the quality of the oil ingredient. But the quality of the finished product also depends on what the manufacturer does next: the added excipients, storage conditions, packaging (opaque or transparent, glass or plastic), and shelf life.

An independent certification of the finished product. EPAX certifies its oil. IFOS certifies the finished product sold to the consumer. These are not the same. An EPAX product is not automatically IFOS certified on the final product.

EPAX vs IFOS: Understanding the Difference

The IFOS certification is the most demanding and transparent because it applies to the product you buy, not the raw material. It verifies that what is written on the box matches what's inside, at the time of purchase.

Norsan achieves the maximum IFOS rating across all criteria for each batch, with results available on their website, batch by batch. This is a rare level of transparency in the market.

EPAX Omega 3 and Women's Health: What the Label Doesn't Cover

For women seeking Omega 3 for fertility, endometriosis, PCOS, or pregnancy, the EPAX label answers part of the question, but not all of it.

The daily dosage of EPA and DHA. For endometriosis and PCOS, the target is 1.5 to 3 g of EPA+DHA per day. For pregnancy, at least 250 mg of DHA daily (ANSES recommendation). EPAX guarantees a high concentration in the ingredient, but it is the manufacturer who defines the final dosage per capsule and the recommended daily dose.

The natural triglyceride form. EPAX can supply oils in the form of ethyl esters or triglycerides. For optimal absorption, the natural triglyceride form remains preferable. An EPAX product is not automatically in this form.

The TOTOX index of the finished product. EPAX guarantees a low TOTOX for its ingredient. But months can pass between the EPAX factory and when you open your box. The TOTOX of the finished product also depends on the packaging and storage conditions.

Key takeaways on EPAX

EPAX is a reputable supplier, with decades of experience and rigorous processes. A product containing EPAX oil is generally of good quality. But the EPAX label is not an independent certification of the finished product: it's an ingredient brand.

To be thorough in your choice, here's what else to check in addition to the EPAX label:

  • Is the molecular form natural triglyceride or ethyl ester?
  • Is there an IFOS certification on the finished product, with public results?
  • What is the TOTOX index of the finished product (not just the ingredient)?
  • Is the packaging opaque and does it protect from light?
  • Is the EPA+DHA dosage per daily serving sufficient for your situation?

EPAX can be a good starting point. It's not a sufficient guarantee on its own. To delve deeper into pro-fertility nutrition and supplements, the program The myth of capsules was designed specifically to help you navigate without getting lost in the labels.

Brief

Is an EPAX Omega 3 necessarily better than an Omega 3 without the EPAX label?

Not necessarily. EPAX guarantees the quality of the oil as an ingredient, but not the quality of the finished product. A product without an EPAX label but with independent IFOS certification on the finished product and a disclosed TOTOX score can be superior. The criteria to check are always the same: triglyceride form, TOTOX, IFOS certification, actual EPA+DHA dosage.
