What you will learn in this episode
Insulin resistance: why check it?
La insulin resistance must be supported as soon as it is identified, as it has a central role in PCOS.
It is not part of the official diagnosis, but it is present in the majority of women concerned and worsens hormonal symptoms.
To check insulin resistance we use an analysis tool that is The HOMA index.
What is the HOMA index?
- It allows, starting from the blood sugar And of theinsulinemia on an empty stomach, to detect possible insulin resistance;
- That is why it is recommended to do These two analyses on an empty stomach : they make it possible to identify early the onset of insulin resistance.
β
π Insulin is used to make Bringing glucose back into the cells to produce energy.
When there is insulin resistance, The cells no longer respond well to the signal β glucose stays in the blood β the pancreas secretes even more insulin to compensate.
In addition, we can calculate the index QUICKI, which measures insulin sensitivity. It starts to decrease before the HOMA index goes up, which makes it possible to identify metabolic imbalances earlier. It is also calculated from fasting blood sugar and insulin levels.
π‘ Key figures
According to several endocrinological studies (including Fertility and Sterility In 2021), At least 57% of women with PCOS have insulin resistance. This situation increases the risk of diabetes and reinforces hyperandrogenism, which then worsens PCOS.
How do I do the HOMA test?
- I ask for the analysis to my general practitioner, gynecologist or midwife ;
- I can also the Do directly in the laboratory, without a prescription, but in this case It will not be refunded (it is not always reimbursed under prescription either).
I can Do a HOMA test again 6 months later to see if my actions had an impact.
What herbs can help reduce insulin resistance?
Organic cinnamon (powder):
- One teaspoon per day (in a yogurt, compote, or drink);
- Help to improve insulin sensitivity and to stabilize blood sugar.
Maitake (medicinal mushroom):
- Can reduce insulin resistance and promote the regularity of the cycle (according to some studies);
- To be taken in the form of powder, capsules or extract, according to laboratory recommendations.
The Gymnema:
- Available in drops or capsules;
- Help to regulate blood sugar and reduces sugar cravings.
β οΈ Important precaution: If I am under Metformin (or any other treatment for diabetes), I do not take these plants alone as they may have too strong an effect coupled with the medication, I ask my doctor for advice before taking any medication.

π― Actions concrΓ¨tes
- To identify my insulin resistance, I perform the exam to calculate the HOMA index or even the QUICKI index beforehand:
- I have my insulin and blood sugar checked on an empty stomach;
- Either I ask my general practitioner, my midwife or my gynecologist for this analysis;
- Or I'm going to do it without a prescription;
- If my results show insulin resistance, I will have it checked by a health professional
- If I take a medication for diabetes (Metformin or other): I do not take any of these elements without thorough medical supervision (doctor/gynecologist + qualified health professional specializing in the natural approach), because they can interact together.
- If I am not on medication, I can try taking
- Organic cinnamon powder (one teaspoon per day);
- Maitake (the dosage depends on the form taken: capsule, powder, drops... Follow the instructions in the box or in the lab);
- GymΓ©nma powder or capsule: this also helps to limit sugar cravings.
